What does a PAN card for NRI means?

It is a laminated card issued by the income tax department containing your PAN number. This is a ten digit alphanumeric number. The PAN number has to be quoted in all financial transactions like buying of cars and immovable property, obtaining a cellular phone connection or land line connection and making a deposit above INR. 50000.00 at the bank or the post office.

How do I register for a PAN or get changes in the existing PAN Card?

The PAN card is a document which you must have if you have to file income tax returns in India or to carry out a host of financial transactions in the country. Among others, it contains your unique PAN number. This is a ten digit alphanumeric number which is issued by the income tax department. It is used as a code to track your finances and calculate the rate at which you would be taxed. Today, it has become quite simple to obtain the PAN card and the process has become faster too. What are the documents required?

Non residents have to provide 2 types of documents:
A. Identity proof: Copy of your passport.
B. Overseas address proof: Bank statement attested by the bank OR Passport copy showing your abroad address.

What is the fee to get one?

We charge Rs.2400 or approximately USD 49 for a new PAN allotment.
For a duplicate or any correction case we charge Rs. 2200 (around USD 44)
The above fee includes the Government processing fees, bank demand draft making fees.
